Way to go, guys! For more information about the brewery or scheduled tours, call 61, or visit their website at. In 2014, Harpoon became an employee-owned company with the introduction of an employee stock ownership plan. In fact, in 2000 they purchased a second brewery in Windsor, Vermont, to keep up with demand. We asked each other, 'Why not do that in New England?'" The result of this initial desire has won them overwhelming approval from the locals and beyond. They were not just manufacturers of a product they were part of the social fabric. As they say on their website, "we learned to appreciate how much local brewers meant to their communities. This is an important component of the brewery and pub lifestyle that the founders witnessed while experiencing European traditions abroad. Harpoon has always been focused on positively impacting their local community. Upon returning, they partnered with George Ligetti and hired brewer Russ Heissner, and by 1987 their first beer was sold as the brewery debuted on the Boston waterfront. Before starting the brewery, the founding team of Dan Kenary and Rich Doyle traveled throughout Europe in search of various beer and brewery styles upon which they would model their own ("product research" we think they called it). Harpoon Brewing Company was founded in 1986, quite early in the US microbrew renaissance. Interested in only IPAs? Find out how to customize your own personal IPA beer club membership here. Harpoon Brewery Tailgater Beer Variety Pack Massachusetts, USA Avg Price (ex-tax) 3 / 750ml Pack contains: IPA, House Golden, Flannel Friday and Octoberfest. The midnight wheat addition adds plenty of dark color and flavor without an overabundance of bitter char and smoke. There’s plenty of deep roasted malt lending some char, but Harpoon has managed to nail the balance of this tricky style, as the dark malts and bold hops play well together. These notes carry over to the palate where the array of very American hops deliver lots of juicy citrus notes. Look for citrus hop aromas, underscored by some roasty notes, and a touch of earth. Pouring a very deep brown-black with reddish highlights, this brew delivers a big head of sticky foam that retains well. The team at Harpoon was kind enough to resurrect the recipe and brew a limited release batch just for our members. So, if you’re looking for a decent American IPA that’s easy to find and doesn’t offend (or challenge) the senses, Harpoon IPA is a sure bet.Originally brewed for their “100 Barrel Series” of one-off beers, this limited edition brew is normally only available-occasionally-in Harpoon’s seasonal IPA Adventure mixed packs. Today, however, there are a lot of IPAs that are OK, and to me, taste very similar to one another. Its interesting to learn that the Harpoon IPA has been in production since 1992, long before this ‘craft beer stuff’ seems to have taken off! Back in 1992, I’m not sure how many craft IPAs were being made domestically, and in that context I could see this beer being a top-shelf example of the style. I’d say it does everything that a good American IPA should, it just doesn’t do it in a way that stands out.Īnd that’s what’s not-so-good about it too. Well, then this Harpoon IPA is a great choice. Maybe you don’t want to get beaten up with hop bitterness, but just want a feel for what its about. Why would it be a good thing? Well, maybe you’re just getting a feel for what an American-style India Pale Ale is. Harpoon’s IPA will most assuredly NOT cause running in fear of the IPA to happen to you, and depending on where you are in the beer nerd spectrum, that might or might not be a good thing! While I still could not identify any given IPA if given a blind taste-test, I’m getting a feel for what is more moderate, and what beers try to push it a bit. Its a shame really, because I’ve come to enjoy the style. DFH-60 is widely admired by craft beer lovers, but as one of the first craft beers I consciously tried, it was simply too much! Too hoppy, too bitter, too much! As a result, I don’t think I had another IPA between 20! If you recall, my first IPA was Dogfish Head’s 60 Minute IPA. Why? Well, they have the ‘typical’ IPA look, taste and feel, but are much more mainstream, less challenging to the novice palate (mine included) yet pique interest in the style. On the plus side, methinks that the Harpoon IPA, much like the Sam Adams Latitude 48 IPA, would be an excellent choice, to try as a first IPA. Others, like their Summer Beer and Oktoberfest weren’t bad, but they didn’t have me crying tears of joy either. I love variety packs! I’ve had mixed feelings about Harpoon beers – some, like their Chocolate Stout, I thought were fabulous. I got to try the Harpoon IPA as part of Harpoon’s ‘Summer Vacation’ variety packs.
